4 Great Road Trips from Glasgow

No doubt the most famous loch in Scotland, Loch Ness is around three hour’s drive from Glasgow but it’s more than worth getting up early to make the trip. This freshwater lake measures 230 metres down at its deepest point, and is best known for rumoured sightings of the infamous Loch Ness monster. There’s no guarantee you’ll spot an ancient dinosaur, but soak up the stunning scenery, explore the visitors centre or even take a boat trip out onto the loch.
Stirling Castle
A mere 30 minute drive from Glasgow, this 12th century castle sits on top of a volcanic crag and houses a wealth of Scottish history. Visit the Great Hall, built for James IV around 1503, the luxurious Royal Palace of James V, the great kitchens where staff prepared royal banquets, and much more. There’s plenty to see outside the castle too; stroll amongst the Queen Anne Gardens or visit the town of Stirling, location of the famous Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
Glencoe
A rough two hour drive north will take you from the city bustle of Glasgow to this stunning national nature reserve. If you’re after some typical Highland Country then Glencoe is perfect, with a rich history of clans and plenty of mountains for keen hikers or climbers. There’s an abundance of trails to choose from for all capabilities, from low level woodland walks to hillwalking routes and challenging climbs like the Three Sisters mountain.
Loch Lomond
This spectacular loch can be reached in under an hour, and is widely regarded as one of the finest lakes, not only in Scotland, but the whole of the U.K. The loch is home to over 30 small islands, some of which are accessible via ferry or waterbus. It’s also a hotspot for a variety of watersports, including kayaking, paddle boarding, water skiing and wake surfing.
